92-year-old Lisa Lu is a venerable actress well-known in both Hollywood and the Chinese film industry. However, not many people know the cute and uplifting personality of this performing artist. Lisa has always been interested in new trends and curious about new things, and she loves spending time with young people. Her legendary adventure to Hollywood in her earlier years and her inspirational character deserve a feature-length movie. This documentary is a tribute to this respectable artist in her late years as well as an inspiration to younger filmmakers who are in pursuit of their film dreams.
LISA BIO
Lisa Lu is a Chinese-born American actress, singer and producer, known for The Last Emperor (1987), The Joy Luck Club (1993) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018). Her mother is the famous Chinese opera actress Li Guifang and her adoptive father is Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous Peking opera artists. Beginning in her teens, Lisa Lu was active in Chinese opera, or Kunqu, before emigrating to the United States. As one of the few first Chinese American actresses in Hollywood, she won the Golden Horse Awards three times in the 1970s, and was honored as one of “The 100 Most Outstanding Chinese in North America.”
At the age of 92, Lisa still goes to auditions and takes on challenging projects. Her love for cinema is contagious and she takes herself as a serious artist. However, in her personal life, Lisa is a cute lady who still keeps her childlike innocence. She likes trendy fashion brands and chocolate; she plays on smart phone a lot and is very interested in new technology. What’s more, she enjoys the company of young people and is always full of energy wherever she goes.
OUR PROJECT
In our production, we shadowed Lisa Lu to record her activities in various kinds of events, e.g. movie shooting sites, award ceremonies, film festivals, stage performances, etc. We also conducted interviews with filmmakers and actors who once worked with Lisa, such as Ang Lee, Ming-Na Wen, Yimou Zhang, Stephanie Powers, Roland Emmerich and many more.
More than a biographical film, the documentary is an inspirational story about creativity and how, even at Lisa’s advanced age, a soaring passion for life continues to sparkle. The film portrays a respectable woman whose enthusiasm for performance, art and people is her life sustenance and whose integrity and virtues remind us of what makes one truly happy. Despite the abundance of glamour in her life today, Lisa Lu remains active in the industry and continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during her early career.
